September Was the Month Institutions Joined Canton

A working group past one hundred firms, six new Super Validators and the first live stablecoin settlement over a weekend. A review of where the Canton Network stood at the end of September.

A neoclassical financial institution building with streams of light and network nodes flowing out from its facade.

For most of its life the Canton Network has been something large financial institutions watched rather than used. In September that changed. The working group forming around the DTCC Tokenization Service passed one hundred firms, six Super Validator proposals were approved, and the first settlements involving real money ran across the network without waiting for banking hours.

The DTCC anchor

The DTCC Tokenization Service sits in its October launch window. The production trades on 15 July were the proof of concept. What follows opens a portion of DTC-custodied securities to on-chain transactions, including U.S. Treasuries, Russell 1000 constituents and exchange-traded funds tracking major indices. Canton is one of the networks carrying that activity. A commercial launch date has not been announced.

The working group around the service now runs past one hundred firms. BlackRock, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citi, Nasdaq and the NYSE are among them, alongside infrastructure providers covering collateral, market data, lending and Asia-Pacific operations.

Settlement that does not wait for Monday

The clearest demonstration came from Lloyds and Visa. Over a seven-day pilot the two institutions settled $750,000 of payment obligations in USDC, with transfers arriving in under an hour including at the weekend, when correspondent banks are closed. Lloyds ran its own node on Canton. Visa settled separately on a public chain.

Broadridge launched DLX in September, built on its Distributed Ledger Repo platform, which processed $7.4 trillion in gross volume in August. In Asia, Kyobo Life and SBI Digital Practice tested a direct yen to won swap with no dollar leg, using test tokens on a Canton test environment.

Nasdaq, Vanguard and Wellington had already completed tokenized collateral trades on the network earlier in the year, with Calypso running the workflow.

The validator set widened

Six Super Validator proposals cleared in a single month. LSEG extended its DiSH cash service on Canton, where intraday repos have settled in proof-of-concept trades. Paxos committed to issuing $20 million of native stablecoins within six months of approval. a16z Crypto was approved on 21 September. Marex will handle institutional settlement for regulated customers, TreasurySpring will record ownership of its Fixed-Term Fund Shares on Canton as the authoritative register, and Shinhan Asset Management took the Korea seat.

The network also received 60 new validator applications during the month, its largest batch to date, of which 21 were approved.

The technical surface opened up

On 28 September Zenith opened its EVM testnet to the public, allowing Solidity applications to be deployed against a Canton test environment with standard Ethereum tooling for the first time. Two days later Kaiko deployed Data On-Ramp on the same testnet, the first institutional-grade oracle on it, carrying regulated multi-asset pricing. S&P Global led the funding round that took Kaiko’s Series B to $110 million.

Scale, in context

Canton generated roughly $48.7 million in fees over the trailing thirty days. Sustained, that would represent close to $600 million a year, though it is a trailing run rate rather than a booked figure. Most of that base is still crypto-native trading and application activity. The institutional share is not yet visible in the fee line, which is precisely what the DTCC launch is expected to change.

What October holds

October is the month the market is waiting on. The commercial opening of the DTCC Tokenization Service sits inside it, and almost everything downstream moves off that window. The date has not been named.

What comes next will not be built on an empty network. The institutions are seated, the validator set has widened, and the transactions have already run. Five North builds Loop Wallet and Loop Data on Canton, and our work through the next quarter is the same as it was through the last: making this network usable by people who should not have to think about it.
