Why the First Tokenized Stock Trade on Canton Matters

Five North's CNTN shares were the first tokenized US equity to trade under the SEC Innovation Exemption, settled on the Canton Network and held in a Loop Wallet.

On 4 November 2026, shares of a Nasdaq-listed company changed hands as tokens for the first time under the SEC’s Innovation Exemption. The trades settled on the Canton Network, and the shares that made them possible came from Five North.

Canton Strategic Holdings (NASDAQ: CNTN) issued its common stock in tokenized form, recorded by an SEC-registered transfer agent. Five North was the first shareholder to take its position onchain, and its shares were the first to trade. For anyone who has followed tokenization, this is the moment it stopped being a pilot and became a market.

From a broker-dealer account to the first trade

Five North held CNTN the way most investors hold stock: in a broker-dealer account, several layers away from the company’s own shareholder register. Here is how that position became the first tokenized shares to trade.

  1. We asked for tokenized shares. Five North requested that its CNTN shares be registered in tokenized form.
  2. The transfer agent recorded them onchain. Fairmint, an SEC-registered transfer agent, recorded the issuer-sponsored tokens directly to Five North’s verified Loop Wallet. The position moved off the broker’s books and onto the company’s onchain shareholder register.
  3. A venue opened a pool. TSV, a permissioned venue for tokenized NMS stocks, set up an automated market maker pool on the Tradecraft protocol, with Flowdesk as liquidity provider.
  4. The first trade settled. Five North sold the first shares into the pool. DRW Cumberland made the first purchases, settled atomically on Canton.

No synthetic wrapper or IOU sits between the token and the share. The token is the share, and its record is the official register.

“Canton was built so institutions could move real assets on chain with confidence. Today a Nasdaq-listed company’s shares were tokenized, held in Loop Wallet, and settled on the network within the SEC’s new framework. We’re proud Five North helped make the first trade happen.” Yiannis Varelas, Founder and CEO of Five North

Why it matters

It is real stock, not a stand-in. Most tokenized equity to date has been synthetic: a token that tracks a price, or a claim on shares held by someone else. These are issuer-sponsored shares recorded by the company’s transfer agent. According to the issuer’s announcement, holders of these tokenized shares receive the same rights and privileges as holders of the company’s stock through Nasdaq.

It happened inside the rules. The trades ran under the SEC’s Innovation Exemption, announced on 17 September. Only verified holders can hold or trade, with identity checks and sanctions screening built in. That is the bar regulated capital needs before it moves.

Settlement collapses into the trade. Traditional equity trades settle a business day later through a chain of intermediaries. Here the shares and the payment move together in one atomic step, and the venue is designed to operate around the clock.

Ownership gets closer to the owner. Our shares now sit in our own wallet, on the issuer’s register, instead of in a broker’s omnibus account. That is a shorter, more transparent path between a company and its shareholders.

The teams that made it happen

No single company could have done this alone. Every role in a regulated market had to be filled, and each one was a first.

  • Canton Strategic Holdings, first to tokenize its public common stock this way
  • Fairmint, first to act as an onchain transfer agent and tokenize a stock
  • Five North, first to tokenize its shares as a shareholder and sell the first shares to trade
  • Flowdesk, first to make a market in this new marketplace
  • DRW Cumberland, first to execute a trade of tokenized stock
  • Tradecraft and TSV, first to run a venue where all of this could happen

Thank you to everyone involved.

What comes next

One stock and a handful of trades is a start, not a market. What it proves is that the full path works end to end: issuer, transfer agent, verified wallet, venue, market maker and buyer, all on one network and inside a regulatory framework.

For Five North, it also proves something about Loop. The first tokenized US stock traded under the Innovation Exemption was recorded into a Loop Wallet. Loop was built to hold regulated assets on Canton with the same ease as any other token, and today it did exactly that.

We expect more issuers, more venues and more holders to follow. When they do, we want Loop to be the wallet they use. This is why we build on Canton.
